Meet the National Merit Semifinalists from Chandler Prep
Chandler Prep November 13, 2024 -
Four seniors from Chandler Prep’s Class of 2025 have qualified as National Merit Semifinalists. Amelia Locery, Andrew Nguyen, Robin Teske, and Joshua Tong have each been recognized as one of the highest scoring entrants of the PSAT, qualifying them for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program as semifinalists of over 1.5 million entrants. They will be continuing on in the National Merit Scholarship competition with the chance to become National Merit Finalists.
Amelia Lockery has attended Chandler Prep throughout middle school and high school. She swims and plays softball, as well as sings in Schola Cantorum and A Capella choirs. Her leadership activities include Titan Leadership Council, Peer Tutoring, Mentoring Program, and House Captain. Lockery plans on majoring in either mechanical engineering or economics after graduating.
Andrew Nguyen has been at Great Hearts since kindergarten at Archway Chandler. At Chandler Prep he participates in the Mentoring Program, plays in the orchestra, serves as a Peer Tutor, and has been a Yearbook member. Nguyen plans to major in biochemistry next year after high school.
Robyn Teske has attended Chandler Prep since 7th grade, and she has been involved in Art Guild, Yearbook, Choir, and the Mentoring Program. Moving forward, Teske is hoping to pursue a degree in secondary education, with an emphasis in English and literature.
Joshua Tong has attended Great Hearts since kindergarten at Archway Chandler. Through his time at Chandler Prep, he has been involved in basketball, track and field, robotics, Mentoring, Peer Tutoring, and Archway Tutoring. Tong plans to major in either electrical or computer engineering after graduation.
“Scoring in the top 1% in the state of Arizona is a very realistic goal for many juniors across the Great Hearts network,” said Great Hearts Director of College Counseling, Roslyn Fletcher. “We expose our high school students to the PSAT early by administering the official PSAT to all 10th grade students across the network. National Merit Finalists typically have the opportunity to pursue merit scholarships that cover full tuition and sometimes even more at many institutions across the country.”
In addition to these exceptional seniors, Chandler Prep also had five students named as National Merit Commended students: Gloria Brezenski, Jensen Edwards, Madison Trang, Kyra Tucker, and Ricardo Uscola. These students were recognized for their strong academic ability, scoring in the top 2-3% of test-takers nationwide, but did not qualify as semifinalists.
