2024 Senior Trip to Washington D.C. – Day Six (Last Day)

Great Hearts Academies March 8, 2024 -

students touring Mount Vernon

It is Senior Trip time at Great Hearts where seniors throughout our academies have the opportunity to visit our nation’s capital and see the historical places and context for so many of their discussions regarding human nature, freedom, liberty, justice, and many other ideals and virtues.

“[This trip is] living out the love of community and conversation- students share this experience together. The focus is not simply for a personal experience connected to history or travel, but a communal experience has been one of sharing time, energy, food, and conversation. This trip means nothing apart from community and friendship,” explained Kyle Navarrette, Headmaster at Glendale Prep.

We spent our last morning in DC utilizing our free time. Some groups went to the zoo, and others got one last look at the monuments and memorials we’ve seen throughout the week.

Mount Vernon

Once everyone was packed, we boarded a bus from our hotel to Mount Vernon, the manor that belonged to our first president, George Washington. The grounds are beautiful and sprawling with his mansion and outbuildings nestled among the rolling grassy hills. We took a tour of his home and spent the rest of the time touring a small portion of the almost 500 acres of preserved land. Everyone got to see beautiful views of the Potomac River and colonial architecture found on the property. Some people got souvenirs before it was time to get on the bus. After Mount Vernon, we boarded the bus for the last time to go to the airport.

This trip has been filled with camaraderie and fellowship. I certainly will remember this week as a highlight of my senior year. A special thank you to all the faculty who kept us safe and punctual on this trip. I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity to go to DC and document our experiences.
